Thank you for your support of the United Brachial Plexus Network (UBPN). Brachial Plexus Injuries (BPI) affect the network of nerves that control the muscles of the shoulder, arm elbow, wrist, hand and fingers. Although most brachial plexus injuries occur at birth, they can also be caused by motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries and puncture wounds. These injuries can cause full or partial paralysis of one or both arms.
My parents were devastated when I received a severe brachial plexus injury during birth. They knew I had a long road ahead of me involving painful surgeries and physical therapy as well as physical limitations that most kids don’t have to deal with. Fortunately, they found the UBPN and its weeklong summer camp for kids affected by BPI and their parents.
I was lucky enough to attend my first camp in 2014. I learned that I wasn’t the only one with certain struggles in life, such as buttoning a shirt, applying deodorant or even tying my shoes. Going to Camp UBPN helped me realize I wasn’t the only one, and it brought me a lot of support and taught me ways to adapt to my daily challenges in life.
Camp UBPN helped my parents, too. The staff at Camp UBPN gave advice on how to mentally and physically support me while I grew up facing these unique challenges. Camp UBPN is a blessing to the families who struggle with this injury, and the more families we are able to have attend, the better.
Each donation goes toward sending a kid with BPI to Camp UBPN where they can learn that they’re not alone.
